So I had been on holiday since 25 November last year and as most of you know I went into holiday mode and literally did nothing... or at least upload anything. I promised some folk I would do an exhibition in March. That isn't going to happen purely because I've been slacking and I started at AFDA on Monday (yay?) and it looks like that place will have me by the balls for the next 3 years, if not longer.

Anyway, just a heads up and because I felt like posting something, I have some pictures that are going to go up within the next few days (I promise!) of Damn Right (from their video launch), Taxi Violence, The Revelators, Bruce Willis??, Holiday Murray, Popskarr and Sweat.x... there are probably some that I'm missing out, but that's all I know of so far.

I've spent many hours looking at my walls lately while I am supposed to be studying. I'm almost meant to be slowly taking things down and throwing stuff away so that when I pack up to move out of here it makes things easier. Anyway, these pictures have been sitting among all the crap on my walls. They were taken on my "adventure birthday trip" to Switzerland 3 years ago. I decided to buy a disposable camera before I left, these were of the 12 pictures that came out - I lost the others.

I know I get on the nerves of most of my closest friends when I reminisce and think about my home. I haven't been back there in about a year and a half and it's been one of those crazy months in Cape Town where I wish I could just end studies and pack up and leave. I've come to realise in recent months that Cape Town is still too backwards for me. She's been deceitful a few times and has made me think that she's changing fast, but it's all a facade really. I'm in an extremely mellow mood this evening. I hope it will pass and I hope I will get to go home soon, if just for a little while.

By far the best Taxi Violence gig I've ever seen - and that is saying something. The Francois appearance was priceless eventhough I got kicked in the face while he was stage diving. George kicked a glass into my stomach and it broke. I went home stinking of beer. I woke up with bruises on my arms, ribs and 2 days later developed a minor one on my cheek.

I've been communicating with Los Angeles based photographer Tyler Shields a lot lately. He works mainly with celebrities and does some music video direction as well and in all of this I realised... South African directors and photographers are way more full of shit that those who work overseas in the real industry, in the real world. The passion is so much more evident when you speak to them than when you speak to these local guys. I think, like so many other things, we're doing this whole thing backwards.

I have a friend in Washington who surprised me the other day by telling me she'd used my picture (top) as motivation for a art practical of hers (below). This is what she had to say about it.

"The subject of the project was machinery. And our art reacher left it pretty open-ended. Most students in the class juxtaposed machinery that is so unnatural, cold, and man-made with human life and flesh. For example, one person took the image of a near and arranged gears and screws inside the ear to illustrate the inner workings of the ear.

I remember sitting in our mac lab going through pictures for inspiration. Picture of machinery, gears, screws, etc and I quickly lost interest. I then remembered a photo you had taken months ago of that doll with its head smashed in perched on a sofa next to your friend in a gorgeous black dress. It was so well composed and always struck me. I printed out the photo and cropped it so that I only had the doll in view. I projected it onto paper a traced the outline out its head. After months of shading and sketching, the part of the body where you friend's hair used to be was empty. There was something missing. I thought about the concept behind the piece... the way our mind works like pieces of well-oiled machinery until we begin to loose our minds. I know I had. But the mind is so much more complex than a series of actions, commands, gears, and screws that work together in perfect unison. I started to imagine everything our brain formulates and represents: words, images, memories, and things that make no sense. So this image that was so structured with a tiny bit of clutter turned into a mess that perfectly defines my state of mind. No one knows exactly what goes on inside that head of ours, but we all seem to realize that it is a beautiful place.

At first this title was so cliche and I only gave the piece that title because I absolutely had to name it to submit it to the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers competition. I think it was then I realized I never name any of my art. I don't think I ever thought about it [pssshhh... the art speaks for itself]. But as cliche as it is, it is fits quite well."

Nothing inspires me less than shooting a band at Kirstenbosch, needless to say, I'm glad the season is almost over. Anyway, Dirty Skirts played their first gig their on Sunday, it was interesting, to say the least. I hated getting caught in a mosh pit of 12 year olds who kept asking for "Homewrecker".

Oh, and the random picture of Goldfish's Dom...he was there too.

Last year I shot Rocking the Daisies for the Cape Times, I'm still not sure if any photos were published, as I don't read the newspaper, but I did gain some respect from bands and band members, especially this guy. Argentinian supermodel/band boy Federico of Son of a Thousand Blues messaged me the other day saying he had a VIP pass for me for the next Rocking the Daisies so I could follow his band. Cool? Yes. This man is a god.

I'm not going to beat around the bush here, Ramfest was the scariest weekend of my entire life, for various reasons. I'll save those stories for another time and place but what I will say is Dawid Fourie and the management were being poes so I couldn't get into the pit, looking back, it wasn't such a bad thing, although I did shoot some bands. Mainly ones I've shot before at some point but some new ones too - Dirty Skirts, Horrorcast, Dead Will Tell, Isonchronous, kidofdoom, the Beams, Taxi Violence, Pretty Blue Guns and New Holland... I think that was all.

My last words for this post is an appeal; if anyone knows Kieran the white-looking coloured straightedge musician from Cape Town who wants to be George van der Spuy's shoelaces, tell him, I'm here and that it's all bullshit.

My favourite white boy, Richard Cole King, writer of SmackTalk blog wrote this post about me and this blog in an attempt to use his "creative license". It's quite inaccurate but a funny read none-the-less. Richard, Richard - I thank the white boy for the street cred.

Photographers make the jobs of bloggers so very much easier. Sourcing quality pics is not always the most pleasant of tasks, but when a photographer who knows what he or she is doing takes photos and posts them on Facebook, Flickr, their own blog or a Google album, a blogger's work load is reduced.

A classic example of bad photography with a point and shoot is my Taxi Violence at Marshall Music post. I had no one to take pics, so I had to.

Anyway, so using photographer's pics is a two way street. Your blog looks great and people get to find out about a new photographer on the scene.

Zahra Robertson, a young girl from the hood spent all she had on a camera so she could make a name for herself in Cape Town's toughest industry. She has overcome many hardships to become one of the finest young artists from the ghetto. I have used her photographs, not because I like the child, but because they are good. [She also is quite delightful in small infrequent doses.] She has recently started a blog featuring her photography.

The school work load is pretty much disgusting - so much so that it has actually kept me in on a Friday night feeling sick and irritated. I did however manage to finish half of my final practical for Design/Photography. The project name is "du jour". I call this specific picture, "One Of Six". I've had this idea for a while, to do a continuous portraiture project. For some reason last night I put in a lot more time to think about it and this morning it was pretty much the only thing that got me out of bed...an hour and a half earlier than usual.
I've never done portraiture but I thought it was about time I started working with people, one on one, and through this overcome my incredibly inappropriate tendency to release my superficial side while shooting.
The project is called "face of the world" although all the blog titles will be the names of those involved. The post will include the face of an individual along with a quote that is personal to them.

We took a trip down to the Breede River about 2 weeks ago, it was probably the most welcomed trip I've almost ever experienced - sometimes the city gets too much. I like going to places where the stars are clearer than they are from my balcony. Sometimes I forget how small I am and sometimes I don't have time to think about it, or anything for that matter - other people, actions, consequences, situations...the situation.

This is my story about the Breede River...

So it was Pro-X on Saturday and I took my camera along and all I took pictures of was the Dirty Skirts - no BMX, no skating...nothing. It's happened often lately that I've taken my camera out and just gotten so over it and then had to lag it around for the whole day - not fun in 30something degree heat. But it happened. Anyway here's one of the 9 pictures I took of the Dirty Skirts.

This guy is rad, the only front man I've ever seen to acknowledge and greet someone in the crowd while in mid-song.

I've been neglecting this blog I feel. It's been a busy and pretty rough past few weeks. Anyway, as I said in an earlier post I took some pics for CHEW the magazine (much thanks to white boy Richard Cole King). CHEW chose and published two of the ones that were sent in along with Richard's Desmond and the Tutus article which I thought was pretty rad. So now finally that CHEW have had their way, I can too. Here are the Desmond pictures that have been missing from the blog. These are the ones that I sent in.
You can download the magazine off the chewthemagazine website. It's actually quite cool - I always thought it was pretty lame but they got some really interesting and cool designs and shoots going on in there.

I just wanted to post this picture of a little man that always comes to visit me. I see him...or one of his many cousins on my bathroom window every evening. I thought I'd give him a feature. Sometimes I feel bad for him... some of us always watch the excitement through a thick piece of glass and are never allowed in even if we make the effort everyday. One day little man, one day... I promise.

Mercury has never been my first place to shoot, or even take my camera, but it happened on Friday night for the Rock Summer Tour. I shot both Desmond and the Tutus and Taxi Violence...again. I wasn't totally impressed with the outcome of the shots, I wasn't able to shoot Desmond and the Tutus the last time I saw them at Assembly either and I believe that Taxi Violence need a bigger stage, sort of the size of the one at Rocking the Daisies. Here are a few of the Taxi Violence ones, the Desmond and the Tutus ones will come after Chew Magazine have used the ones they wanted.

I did some party pictures for the we-are-awesome website last night at LB's at the Get Nasty - Underwater Extasy party. The party pretty much lived up to every Get Nasty expectation - pretty insane vibe with pretty insane people spraying water and pissing the shit out of me. It was fun, would've been better if I didn't have to shoot.
